Bassoon/Contrabassoon
The bassoon is a double-reed instrument with a warm, melancholy timbre. Its tone is not very well suited to percussive, staccato playing, so it is frequently used as a flowing pad for other instruments to play over. The video example is part of Sergei Prokofiev's Peter And The Wolf that features a bassoon quartet (three bassoons and a contrabassoon) as the voice of the Grandfather character.

Clarinet
The clarinet is a single-reed woodwind instrument with a midrange timbre, not unlike the human voice. Thicker and louder than a flute, it has a tone that's well-suited to high staccato playing. In the video example, the two seated players are playing Alto and Bass clarinet. The Bass is also in Bb, but the alto is in Eb. All three have the same fingerings, but the Bass is an octave lower, while the Eb is between the two.
